Natural landmark – Geological formation Location: Inside Ras Mohammed Nature Reserve, approximately 20 km from Sharm El-Sheikh Environment Type: Limestone rocks and deep ground fissures formed by seismic activity The Seismic Crack is a natural ground fault formed as a result of an ancient earthquake that struck the South Sinai region. Tectonic activity caused the rock layers to split apart, creating a deep fissure in the earth. Over time, part of it filled with seawater due to tidal movement, giving it a unique appearance that combines desert and marine elements. Geological Importance: • A clear example of the impact of tectonic plate movement in the Red Sea region. • Illustrates the geographical separation between the continents of Asia and Africa. • Used as an educational site for geology and eco-tourism students. Natural Characteristics: • Depth: Reaches approximately 15–20 meters in some sections. • Water: Salty and clear in the lower parts. • Rocks: Fractured limestone formations with sharp structures and defined angles. Tourist Activities: • Observing rare rock formations. • Nature photography. • Eco-tourism tours. • Carefully exploring the crack on foot. Best Time to Visit: • Morning or before sunset to avoid high temperatures. • Preferably visited as part of a full Ras Mohammed Nature Reserve tour program.
